Domain names hold a high value for you and the keywords that are relevant to you site. Finding a way to put keywords into your domain is an excellent first step in getting your business website found in search engines.
There is always a balance between putting your brand, and putting your keyword in the domain. Equally, if you have multiple products and multiple keywords, how do you choose then? I recommend finding a keyword that is not too specific that it rules you out for other search terms. Above all it must be recognisable by humans, because they must click on it for a high SERP rank to matter.
So, what if you have the luxury of a website with one clear primary long-tail keyword? If the domain is available I always recommend pouncing on it. Take for example the question “who won the Melbourne cup?”
The phrase is searched 4500 times in the month of November. So if I want to rank well for that search term, then the best first step is to secure a long-tail domain like, WhoWonTheMelbourneCup.com.au.
It is not the only ranking factor, and certainly no guarantee of success. But give it a search and see.
When it comes to long-tail, exact match search terms it is good to keep this in mind, people approach their search engines with a question in mind. Form that question, and see if the sentence is available as a domain name.
This is likely to be a strategy apart from your brand website headquarters. It will work well for additional strong niches that you are looking to be found by users who do not yet know your brand, but are looking for your product.
